Professor Dr. rer. nat. Dietrich Braun, born on 28 November 1930 in Leipzig, studied chemistry at the universities of Leipzig and Mainz after passing the school leaving examination in 1949 at the secondary school in Crimmitschau. In 1955, he completed his studies with the Diplom-Hauptexamen, and in 1957 he received his doctorate from the University of Mainz, where he also habilitated in the field of macromolecular chemistry in 1960. Since 1959, Braun has been head of the Chemistry Department of the German Plastics Institute in Darmstadt, and has held the overall management of the Institute since 1969. He has also been Professor of Macromolecular Chemistry at the Technical University of Darmstadt since 1977. Braun is active as a consultant and reviewer on various committees of scientific institutions. He is also editor or co-editor of several scientific journals and a valued author for scientific articles.

The achievement of the awardee is that he conducted basic research on urea-formaldehyde resins, melamine-formaldehyde resins and other aminoplast-based resins, thus providing valuable information for improvements in the production of foam plastics.
