Dr. Gerhard Fritz, born on July 7, 1921, in Wehmlingen/Baden, studied economics and business administration at the University of Freiburg and at the Mannheim School of Economics. After working as a research assistant at the Chair of Economics at the Business School, he first worked as a consultant, then as managing director of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce for the Palatinate. In 1964, he was appointed curator of the German Foundation for International Development (DSE). Fritz was a member of the German Bundestag from 1956 to 1965. Here he was a member of the Economic Committee, the Committee for Economic Cooperation and the Development Policy Discussion Group of the CDU/CSU. He is also a member of the Society for International Development (SID), the Club de Dakar and the German sub-group of the Club of Rome. He has distinguished himself internationally through numerous publications on development policy issues.
The pioneering work of the recipient of the award is that he opened the way at government level for the application of foam plastics in agriculture by providing experimental plots in developing countries, thus contributing to the introduction of plastoponics in arid regions.
