Dr. Rainer Marutzky was born on 11 August 1947 in Halle/ Saale. In 1966, he passed his school leaving examination at the Mathematical and Scientific High School of the Lessingschule in Bremerhaven and, after completing his military service, studied chemistry at the Technical University of Braunschweig from 1968 to 1973. After completing his doctorate under Professor Karl Wagner, he worked as a post-doctoral fellow at the Society for Biotechnology in Braunschweig-Stöckheim in the field of enzyme chemistry until 1975. In 1976 he joined the Frauenhofer Institute for Wood Research as a research associate. Today he is head of the department of technology and environmental protection at this institute. Numerous publications in national and international journals as well as lectures at national and international events are proof of his active research activities.

The achievement of the award-winning scientist is that he developed measuring methods and procedures for the improvement of environmental protection in the production and processing of plastics and wood-based materials and determined the analytical characteristic values necessary for the evaluation of materials and work processes.
