Dr. rer. nat. Karl Dachs was born on 16 December 1924 in Munich. He completed his school education with the school leaving examination at the Realgymnasium. His further education was initially interrupted by military service. He then studied chemistry at the Technical University of Munich from 1946 to 1952, where he completed his assistant work at the Organic-Chemical Institute with a doctorate in 1954. In 1955 he joined the Plastics Laboratory of BASF AG in Ludwigshafen. From 1960 onwards, he headed a working group in which, among other things, polyamide foams were developed. In 1965 he changed to the textile application technology.

The achievement of the award is that in the course of work on the ionic polymerization of caprolactam and the extrusion of polyamides containing blowing agents he produced foam plastics with a wide range of variable pore size, pore density, density by volume and mechanical strength.
